In British Columbia, the HVAC marketing shortlist is shaped by a near-even split between gas and electric heating, a big climate gap between the coast and the Interior, and rebate rules that changed mid-2026. That makes three items from our services menu unusually important here: carefully dated rebate pages, local search set up separately for each sub-region, and replacement campaigns aimed at households switching systems. This is also where our own HVAC work began; we're headquartered in Vancouver.
The BC market and its buyers
Short answer: dense, competitive metros on the coast and spread-out, longer-season markets inland. In 2023, 42% of BC households used natural gas for their primary heating system and 36% used electricity, according to Statistics Canada. That mix means buyers range from gas-furnace owners weighing a heat pump to electric-baseboard households considering their first ducted or ductless system.
The largest markets are Metro Vancouver municipalities such as Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam, plus Abbotsford, Kelowna and Saanich. Each has its own competitive set. A Surrey company and a Kelowna company rarely compete for the same search, so a province-wide campaign wastes money.
Seasonality: coast versus Interior
Short answer: the coast has a long, mild heating season; the Interior and North have shorter, sharper peaks. Southwest BC's winters are mild and wet, so heating demand is steady rather than explosive. The Interior and northern BC have much colder, longer heating seasons, where a cold snap triggers real no-heat urgency.
For marketing, that means:
- Coast: steadier budgets, strong emphasis on comfort, efficiency and heat-pump comparison content.
- Interior and North: weather-paced paid search that rises with cold snaps, and no-heat landing pages ready before November.
Regulators to know in BC
Short answer: link to them, don't interpret them. We don't give compliance advice, but your site and ads should be consistent with your actual licences.
- Technical Safety BC oversees gas, electrical, refrigeration and boiler safety and licenses gas and electrical contractors, even in the handful of local governments that issue some permits themselves.
- SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, now in effect for several mechanical and electrical trades including gasfitters, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics and sheet metal workers.
- WorkSafeBC handles workplace safety and insurance, and Consumer Protection BC covers consumer matters.
BC programs as of October 2026
Short answer: income-qualified rebates narrowed in July, and a federal-provincial retrofit program opened in June. Confirm every detail with the administrator.
- CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program: income-qualified rebates for heat pumps, heat-pump water heaters and envelope work. For invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, new requirements apply: some rebates were dropped, electric-to-heat-pump upgrades are limited to the lowest income level, and the highest level is limited to ground-oriented homes moving off gas, propane or oil.
- CleanBC Home Renovation Rebate Program: still listed for households that aren't income-qualified. We couldn't confirm current amounts, so we wouldn't quote any.
- Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program in BC: a June 29, 2026 agreement funds no-cost upgrades through BC Hydro for about 6,000 lower-income households and through FortisBC for about 1,000 more.
Menu picks for a BC HVAC company
Short answer: rebate accuracy, sub-regional local search, then replacement demand.
| Priority | Menu items | Why in BC |
|---|---|---|
| Start now | Rebate pages with dates, program-change monitoring | July 2026 changes left many sites quoting outdated eligibility |
| Start now | Business Profile service areas and community pages per sub-region | Coast and Interior buyers search and compare differently |
| Add next | Heat-pump replacement campaigns, quote follow-up | Gas and electric households are both weighing switches |
| Add next | Review flow | Dense metros mean side-by-side profile comparisons |
| Usually wait | Province-wide brand campaigns | Markets rarely overlap; spend locally |

Frequently asked questions
Did BC heat-pump rebates change in 2026?
Yes. The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program set new requirements for invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, removing some rebates and narrowing which households qualify for certain upgrades. Check betterhomesbc.ca before quoting anything.
Should a Lower Mainland HVAC company market differently from an Okanagan one?
Usually, yes. Coastal demand is shaped by mild, wet winters and dense housing, while the Interior has a longer, colder heating season. Separate service-area settings, pages and ad schedules help each market get the message it needs.
Who licenses gas and electrical contractors in BC?
Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors, even where a local government issues some permits. For your own licensing questions, go directly to Technical Safety BC.
